Column Caps and Bases Explained

The shaft does not include a cap or a base. Order them as separate parts. The number on the cap or base is the shaft diameter at that end. The hole is ¼ inch larger than the nominal size, so an 8 inch part has an 8¼ inch opening and the shaft can slip in.

CAP100 Tuscan cap

Sizes 6 through 16 inches. CAP100-8 is 11½ inches wide, 2¾ inches high, with an 8¼ inch opening. A plain classical cap.

CB400 plain cap or base

It works as either a cap or a base. Sizes 6 through 16 inches, all 2¾ inches high. CB400-8 is 10 7/16 inches wide with an 8¼ inch opening. The simplest finish in the set.

CAP700 Scamozzi cap

Corner scrolls, called volutes. Sizes 6 through 16 inches. CAP700-8 is 13¼ inches wide and 5¾ inches high.

CAP500 Corinthian cap

Acanthus leaves. Sizes 6 through 16 inches. CAP500-8 is 12¾ inches wide and 9¼ inches high. The most ornate cap in this range.

BSE100 Tuscan base

Sizes 6 through 16 inches. BSE100-8 is 11½ inches wide, 5¼ inches high, with an 8¼ inch opening. The usual base under a Tuscan cap.

BSE600 Attic base

Sizes 6 through 16 inches. BSE600-8 is 11 inches wide and 4¾ inches high. The profile is deeper than the Tuscan base.

Rope set, CAP900 and BSE900

8, 10, and 12 inch sizes, made for rope columns only. CAP900-8 is 12½ inches wide and 11¼ inches high. Do not put a Tuscan cap on a rope shaft.

Which number to order

Pairing

A Tuscan cap with a Tuscan base stays simple. A Scamozzi or Corinthian cap with an Attic base reads more formal. Rope shafts stay with the rope cap and rope base. Rope columns are the only shafts those parts fit. The round parts on this page are for decorative columns and the matching structural shafts, not for square box columns.

Box columns use molded trim that is part of the column. There is no separate square cap or base in this range.
