Column Questions

Decorative and structural columns are different parts. Decorative columns do not carry the building. Structural porch posts are their own list. Cap size is covered with column caps and column bases. Freight and the cut-in-half option are below. The install order is in the column installation instructions.

Are polyurethane columns load-bearing?

Decorative columns are not load-bearing. The building load has to sit on its own support, such as an existing post, a beam, or a steel pipe. Structural models, the SKUs that end in S plus PP32xx porch posts and SBCS box columns, have an internal metal support. You still confirm the assembly and the load for your own project.

What is the difference between shaft height and overall height?

On a decorative CLM column the 96, 120, or 144 inch number is the shaft only. The cap and the base add their own height. On a structural model that same number is the overall height, including the flanges. The sizing page walks through one assembled example.

How do I pick the cap and base size?

The cap matches the top diameter. The base matches the bottom diameter. A 10/8 tapered column takes an 8 inch cap and a 10 inch base. A straight column uses the same size at both ends.

Can I wrap an existing steel post?

Yes, with a decorative column. The factory can cut it in half lengthwise for $40 per column. The halves go back together on site with PL Premium adhesive, PLP100. Structural columns are never split. Measure the post and any plates first and compare them with the hollow opening on the drawing. Caps and bases can be cut in half too, and they are glued back with PL Premium only. See wrapping a post.

Can structural columns be split?

No. The cut-in-half option is only for decorative columns. A structural column has an internal metal support and ships as one piece.

Can I cut a column to height?

Yes. Order the next shaft height up and trim on site with a fine-tooth saw. Cut from the bottom only, never the top. On a tapered column the top diameter has to stay matched to the cap. The steps are on the sizing page.

Do they come painted?

They ship primed white. Paint them after they are installed. The finish notes are in painting factory-primed Spectis millwork.

How are they shipped and how long does it take?

Columns are made to order and cannot be returned. They ship from the Spectis plant in Manitoba, typically in two to three weeks, by LTL freight to a commercial address. A $275 fee applies if the carrier classifies the address as residential.
